Welcome to NOVAKOMMS and our story so far

First of all, welcome to NOVAKOMMS and welcome to our first official blog post. What a journey!

Some people discover their passions early and others a little later in life. Warren Buffet had an epiphany at the age of 10, Bill Gates went into business at the age of 15. By no means I aim to compare myself to these giants. I fell into the third category – I discovered my passion early in life and acted upon it a little later.

Since I was a boy, I’ve been passionate about business and understanding people. I’d wonder how one person is capable of making such a huge difference in the world as if I was comparing business owners to superheroes. I was certain that one day I’d have my own company, but I just didn’t understand the mechanics behind one at all.

Until today, my life has followed exactly the same principle of seeing the end destination, the end goal, but not knowing the exact journey to get there. Whether this was attending university 1200 miles away from home or starting a business. It is something that Richard Branson talks a lot about.

Choosing a name

It has certainly been an adventure so far with one of the biggest challenges of choosing a name. When writing a book or an article, choosing a name is something you do last. Once one is completely immersed in the substance, the name comes out naturally.

With business, however, it works the other way round. You choose a name and then you start building a business. You have a clear idea about products and services you will offer and the plan you want to follow, however the reality is that having an idea is only 10% of the work. 90% is execution and that is where most people crumble. I can tell you about the endless social networks, apps and low-cost gluten-free products I had in mind and none of them got executed. Belief, perseverance and focus are key.

Before we came up with the name NOVAKOMMS we had exactly 25 different names ranging from MarketWise, Social Intuitive and even OmniNovak (Correct, like “omnipresence”!) – I am glad we chose NOVAKOMMS in the end. Phew!

Why NOVAKOMMS, you ask? For anyone who isn’t aware yet, we are a marketing communications agency. A widely-known abbreviation for marketing communications is MarComm or MarComms. Novak is my surname and NOVAKOMMS connects the two together.

Something that most people, and me included, didn’t realise is that you can come up with the most innovative and the most engaging name for your business, but unless this name is available in the domain registrar, across all Social Media platforms and in the Companies House, you are back on the drawing board or at least have to tweak it. I assume you don’t want to be called @YourCompany1234.


Over the last few months, I’ve been privileged to get in touch with some of the greatest business minds and branding experts who engraved in me the importance of branding and going “all-in”. People like Grant Cardone, who transformed the way I think about life and business or Linzi Boyd, who told me like it was yesterday, that “The businesses that grow the fastest are brand-led.”

The number 1 reason why branding is paramount to advertising is because it helps your customers know WHO you are, WHY you are here and WHAT they should expect from you. This goes beyond just the cosmetic aspects of having a fancy logo and flashy imagery (Even though I am pretty happy with the combination of our black and #ffcc33 gold!). I am talking about the Mission, Vision and Values.

Customers need to know what they should associate your company with, i.e. Reliability for FedEx, Simplicity for Apple, Safety for Volvo.

At the end of the day, your brand is what your customers say about you. Rather then what you say about you. This is where your brand value lies and where your brand story should be aligned with your strategy. Branding goes first, advertising second.

After long 48-hour days and even longer nights, the business was born. It is only the beginning of, what we hope, a long journey and so the real fun starts now. There is a saying that goes: “It’s lonely at the top”. No offence to the person who came up with it, but to me it’s an utter nonsense. There has been more people supporting us, with the offer to help and more new relationships started to emerge than ever before. For that, we are really humbled and grateful.

There are times when we need to find strength, motivation and realign our purpose, but that perishes very quickly with new exciting projects and challenges. It’s an incredibly rewarding journey that I encourage anyone to pursue.
